1. That I could cure cancer.
2. That I could fly to London and see Much Ado About Nothing starring David Tennant and Catherine Tate.
In the meantime, I'll enjoy my copy of Doctor Who Series 4 that I got for $30 on Amazon. Yay sales! It was between Series 1 & 4. Those are my faves.
3. That I could conjure chocolate ice cream at will.

Fish and Chips Part One: Black Labrador
I've been searching for authentic UK fish and chips in my city. I blame (new) Doctor Who Series 1.
![]()
I googled Fish and Chips and found a funny little online chat about it which occurred in 2009. According to the chatters, finding authentic fish and chips in my city is an impossible quest.
My fave post:
"Sam, I have been searching without success sorry to say. Essentially, my ideal fish and chips will be served in paper and lashed with Salt & Vinegar and Mushy peas. Closest you will get is in New York.
Bull & Bear on Westheimer is the best of the rest in H-town. Weird as it may seem, from a taste point of view Long John Silvers on Gessner gets closest to the right taste.
A little while back, I bought a deep fat fryer and some fresh Atlantic cod and converted my apartment into a chipper for the evening, Got the right spuds (potatoes) from Central market, made the batter and peas and served it all up in the Daily Telegraph. We also got in 120 cans of Boddingtons and went for broke. GREAT NIGHT!!
Whenever I fly into Manchester the first place I hit after picking up my bags is the 'chippie' in Salford. Food porn...nuff said."
Hee! It's served in News Paper!
The number one place on my list was the Black Labrador, a little pub/restaurant. So today I popped by, and I was tempted to speak with a UK accent when I ordered. I refrained but I DID speak in a UK accent when I arrived back at my grandmother's house to share the meal.
The fish was puffy! It was strange at first but then kind of delightful. It came with vinegar, lemon and chowder, also steak fries. The fries were kind of wimpy rather than crispy. But it was pretty good. I'd give them a 3/5
My sister attempted to dissuade me from my quest saying, "It's just grease." But I will continue on, despite the fact that I've never been to the UK and so wouldn't know if I found the authentic meal.
Next up... Long John Silver's.

The Devil and Dan'l Webster
This week was MY week to choose a film for movie night.
"In the golden age of law that followed the American Revolution, the Supreme Court bar was populated by legal giants cut of the same cloth as John Marshall and Joseph Story. It was an era of interminable speeches, brilliant triumphs, wild temerities, and mortifying defeats. There was Daniel Webster, "black Dan" who could argue the Devil out of his due." ~ Stephen M. Shapiro
"He was a great lawyer, Dan'l Webster, but we know who's the King of Lawyers, as the Good Book tells us, and it seemed as if, for the first time, Dan'l Webster had met his match." ~ The Devil and Dan'l Webster
![]()
I browsed around online looking for a film, preferably an older film, to catch my fancy. Then I saw this poster.
![]()
It looked fun and interesting, like a fairy tale. I enjoy Faust, so I thought it would be fun to see what new and interesting things this screenwriter and director would do with the story.
The movie itself was alright. It would have done better as a Twilight Zone episode. I really enjoyed the beginning and the end of the film, the middle was very dull. The photography, art direction and performances were very good for the most part. I was especially impressed with the Devil and (during the trial) Dan'l Webster. Walter Huston portrayed the Devil or Mr. Scratch while Edward Arnold portrayed Daniel Webster.
chatchien knows all the old character actors and this film was chalk full of some good ones. It was like old old old school Fairy Tale Theater.
While I was suffering though the boring section of the film, and wrestling with my slow connection on youtube,
chatchien chatted with me about the history behind the story and the fact that the screenplay of the film was based on a short story of much better quality by Stephen Vincent Benet.
Here's a link about the story and the history it connects to.

This story was so much fun to read. The voice of the narrator is superbly written. The voice is colloquial and full of humor as well as staunch patriotism. It read like oral tradition more than written literature so I couldn't resist reading aloud. I had fun with it as an American History folk tale. I found myself laughing throughout, reflecting on my own humanity and even getting a little teary eyed near the end of the story. I've been challenged before to take pride in America, in spite of its faults, not judging it based on corruption, but holding on to what I feel the country should be and fighting for that vision. This story made me feel a few warm fuzzies about being a free human being and an American and why those things are worth fighting for even in the midst of... corruption and evil. This story is very anti-apathy. This movie choice turned out to be very appropriate for the Fourth of July. But it story isn't preachy as much as it is fun, hilarious and thought provoking.
As I was reading I thought about Disney TV and Appalachian tales.

Shortcut: Just read the bold...
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us most. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and famous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in all of us. And when we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
Used by Nelson Mandela in his 1994 inaugural speech - Maryanne Williamson Quote
Before Night Falls is a work of art. At almost any moment you could freeze frame, make a screencap, blow it up, frame it and hang it on a wall for artwork. Every so often there are films like this that remind you that movies are moving PICTURES. Before Night Falls is a magnificent moving picture. One thing that struck me is that the visuals are so beautifully composed but the pace is so fast. I’m used to seeing beautiful pictures on display in Japanese films or even in Where the Wild Things Are in long languorous shots. This film keeps up the pace and the beauty.
Javier Bardem is an amazing actor. And he’s amazing at my very favorite thing – behavior. There are some actors who are just fascinating to watch because they just live in the moment, they behave naturally and spontaneously in the moment. He’s amazing at this. Also Chatchienne pointed out that he’s a physical communicator, a physical story teller. That you can tell what he’s feeling and thinking and saying even when you can’t understand his heavily accented English. Not all actors are like this. Olivier Martinez plays Bardem’s lover near the end of the film and he’s very stoic. You would need the dialog to tell you what’s going on with him. So between the cinematography, the director’s pace/vision and Javier embodying this guy, I was delighted.
Let me find a summary of the film to just copy and paste...Here we go...from Culture.com
Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2000 Venice Film Festival, Before Night Falls is a richly imagined journey into the life and writings of the brilliant Cuban author and exile Reinaldo Arenas. Directed and co-written by Julian Schnabel (basquiat (1996)), the film stars Spanish actor Javier Bardem (Live Flesh (1997), jamon, Jamon (1992)), whose eloquent, complex performance as Arenas earned him the 2000 Venice Film Festival's Volpi Cup for Best Actor.
Before Night Falls spans the whole of Arenas' life, from his rural childhood and his early embrace of the Revolution to the persecution he would later experience as a writer and homosexual in Castro's Cuba; from his departure from Cuba in the Mariel Harbor exodus of 1980 to his exile and death in the United States. It is a portrait of a man whose search for freedom - artistic, political, sexual - defied poverty, censorship, persecution, exile and death. Like Arenas' work, Before Night Falls combines passages of transporting imagination with urgent realism; in so doing, it embodies the creative ethos to which Arenas dedicated himself: transforming experience into unfettered expression.

The reason I wanted to watch a film about an artist is that lately the color has gone out of things for me. And artists, the way they see the world it’s just so fully saturated with SOMETHING. They just see the magic in things. Even artists that focus on pain like Frieda Kahlo translate that into something vivid and amazing and yeah magical and IMO essentially spiritual. This kind of outlook is kind of essential for me to keep the wind in my sails. Functionality doesn’t do it for me. I was expecting some type of escape and – with this film – a lot of ugliness. I didn’t really know anything about this artist or this time in history. I wasn’t sure I would want to be in his world/head. However, right from the opening menu I was just... ENGROSSED.

The menu was like a black and white short film in and of itself. By the time I actually started watching the film I was really excited.
I love the way the film just immerses the viewer in Reinaldo Arenas’ world with no explanations. The story was very intimately from Arenas’ POV. I quickly found out why it was Chat’s favorite film. She’s so great at catching details (in language and/or visuals) and receiving the story not only as it is told but as it is shown. There was so much visual storytelling going on. She was really pulling out themes too, especially regarding Arenas’ hole. *giggle* That sounds funny but at the beginning of the film he’s digging in this hole. It’s shaped like a grave and he’s in there, naked little boy, digging and there’s a glass bottle in there. It’s was a recurring motif through the film. Also rain, there’s a moment where he talks about the rain sounding like armies marching. That image recurs. My favorite was when Chat pointed out the dark clouds on the horizon. Fantastic. Those dark clouds transitioned the story from the fruitful, hopeful springtime of Arenas’ life into the dying fall and bleak winter of his career which was full of censorship and imprisonment. There’s lots of eating in the film which we analyzed. Boiled egg and broccoli never seemed as delicious as in this film. Yum!
I wanted to watch a film about an artist to get away from the bleak normalness of life. The electric lights and logic and taxes and politics and religion… the everyday sides of those things. But what was great about this film is that I felt fully immersed in the protagonist’s artist mind, so I got to experience the world through his beautiful eyes and words BUT his creativity is so entwined with the reality of everyday life. His creativity feeds off of the dirt and the horror and the poverty and the injustice and the sex and oppression and the dancing and the… it wasn’t an escape the way Frida Kahlo was in Julie Taymor’s film for example or even Tim Burton’s about Ed Wood LOL! With Kahlo … the colors and the abstraction … the distillation… rendered the world almost unrecognizable. It took the everyday world and horror and her chronic pain and made it this abstract riot of color and music and passion. So it was an escape. But this guy… he can escape in an old glass coke bottle. In rain. In the switch of a tranny’s hips there’s no… he’s not removed from reality at all… when he creates his magic. The ugliness, the grittiness is his magic carpet ride to the typewriter… it is his muse in a way.
He has this poem about a dirty faced child. “I am the dirty faced child that begs you for a quarter.” And he doesn’t idealize that child at all. “If in your hypocrisy you pat me on the head I will use that opportunity to pick your pocket and steal your wallet.” And yet somehow there is pathos and beauty… in his fierce honesty about that dirty faced child’s existence. He doesn’t apologize! Oh I’m going to cry just thinking about it. He never apologizes for who he is, for what he is. And for me it’s bigger than homosexuality. He’s this unique creature! And all around him people don’t know what to make of him or where he belongs. But he never questions that. He never lets the people around him define him. Not to go all hippy dippy and pseudo spiritual but that’s so GOD to me. Like… I really believe that we are created to be these unique creatures and not everyone is going to get you. You’ve got to just plow ahead with that essential calling in your core. When you start attacking that or stifling that to conform to something other humans impose on you… you start to die.
Anyway I loved that the film didn’t shy away from his homosexuality but it doesn’t exploit. I never felt that it was selling me something or idealizing him as some sort of gay hero. It just felt honest. I thought it dealt with his sexuality honestly but also elegantly. It didn’t seem gaudy not even when Tranny Johnny showed up. My jaw dropped! It’s a period film but even that is so subtle and so grounded in recognizable reality. Sometimes period can be used to heighten a setting and provide a kind of escape. The director manages to preserve the charm of this time period to a certain degree while still being true to the not so charming aspects of the setting. That’s what’s amazing about this artist and perhaps the director as well. He is inspired by all of reality. It’s all material for him, not just the secrets or the darkness, or the pain or the… some artists you feel that you are seeing the world through a filter that highlights one area while low lighting others. But with this guy it… he doesn’t discriminate. His feet are on the ground. It’s just a masterful film.
One of my favorite things that randomly popped into my head just now was the way that he would write poetry all over the place as a child. He would carve it into trees. And later in the film he’s on the run and he’s putting pieces of paper all over the place, under rocks and stuff. There was something I loved about that. Like the whole world is his poetry tablet. Also, his connection to nature was just magical. You could just see the elements feeding him. At the end, living in New York he even had a few plants around him for spiritual nourishment. The snow moment on the top of the bus or car or whatever was great too. Freedom! My favorite line was during a GOTCHA moment. He’s been discovered. This guard in jail has his book that was banned but somehow it had been smuggled out of Cuba and it was published in France. And there’s all the tension – what is he gonna do? Is he gonna deny writing the book? How is he going to get out of this? All this fear I was feeling even as I was so glad that his book got published. And he thinks, I can’t remember the exact quote… something like, “This book was the only evidence that I was still alive.” I loved that! I loved that. Beautiful film. What a guy. How true to his art he was. I cried twice but it was more inspiring than sad. I wanna read more of this guy's poetry.
So instead of stealing screencaps and crediting people I’m just going to link you to DVD Beaver. I didn’t read his review of the DVD but he has a few caps of the DVD menu so you can see how beautiful it is. You can’t hear the music or the Spanish or see the montage in motion but maybe you’ll get an idea of why I went all dramatic cat over it. Also near the bottom there are screencaps! I think you’ll get to see the broccoli and egg meal with looming gloomy clouds, Javier with a book and Johnny Depp in one of his two roles in the film.

And here’s one final cap of the rain! Thanks to http://benpalmeractor.files.wordpress.com
Finally just for you Chatchienne I’m posting a link to a LJ devoted to Javier Bardem. This page has caps of him using his body to tell the story in Before Night Falls and some other film with Penelope Cruz. Are they married now?

Did you ever see Eat, Pray, Love? He was the best thing about that film. I want to watch it right now just to see him. <3 Actually... Javier, the food and Viola Davis. I adore her. Those were the best things. Julia made it all easier to swallow... it's her gift.

I cry so easily at movies! The first thing that came to mind was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I'm a potterhead or whatever cute nickname potter fans have... and the final film... man. I cry so much in that film! I don't want to spoil anyone but there's a moment where a werewolf character is eating a ... student. I start sobbing EVERY SINGLE TIME.
The second thing that popped into my head was Babette's Feast and I'll go ahead and lump Amelie in there. The first is my all time fave film, the second is my very best in the movie theater film watching experience. They both make me cry with joy. Joyful tears!

I learned that Katie Holmes' performance in Batman Begins really doesn't ruin the movie. Granted, I was out of the room during the scene I hate the most.

La Triviata - The Fallen Woman
My friend Crystal invited me to the opera this month for the two shows going on in repertory at the Houston Grand Opera. Last night's show was La traviata by Giuseppe Verdi, Francesco Maria Piave. La Triviata by Guisseppe Verdi.
So Vivian's reaction (Julia Roberts' character in Pretty Woman) to this opera is basically me last night though my comments were slightly different. LOL! Also I probably cried more.
AH-MA-ZING.
THE PARALLELS between Violetta (la triviata) and Vivien (Pretty Woman) are kinda interesting too.
Our Violetta for the night was the incomparable Albina Shagimuratova, a diva of the highest order. The program called her the reigning Queen of the Night because of how many times she has performed that role from the Magic Flute all over the world. Her voice is exquisite.
The direction and set design were superb. The end was foreshadowed throughout by a wraith-like Violetta who silently ghosted around with a single white rose. The set dressing was simultaneously opulent and decaying. The chorus of party people was this writhing, sensual, depraved mass of bodies and gorgeous clothing. They were like one large organism. They never stopped moving except at Violetta's death bed. Even from super super high up, the show was magnificent!
Next up... The Rape of Lucretia.

I'm addicted to tumblr.
It's sort of like collecting icons but the pictures are all sizes and the fandom squee is intense! Things are more compartmentalized. You have your own blog and you sent things out into space. People can only leave little twitter-like replies unless they copy your whole post to their blog. So conversational squee is more difficult. It's easier to be a lurker there than here and I don't have to pay for anything. Busy Busy Bee and the Marvelous Marvel Marathon
I've been so busy that my Tumblr addiction has taken a serious backseat to my real life. That makes me happy because it would make me really sad to lose my job(s) because I'm browsing tumblr which... for a while seemed like it might be a possibility. Hee! Also, what I did with my first day off!
I'm in a show called My Wonderful Day. It will be the regional premiere of that show in my area. It's nerve racking because this is the most high profile stage I'll have been on probably in my career. On the other hand it's really fun because I'm surrounded by familiar faces and wonderful professionals. I'm also doing a touring show in the mornings and even though I'm not really a musical theater trained actor... I'm surrounded by friends and pros so that makes everything 10000 times better.
LAST NIGHT - oh my goodness - LAST NIGHT was my first free day in about a week and a half. I decided to be daring/crazy and go to the Marvel Movie Marathon! Oh my goodness! It was amazing! I've always been more of a DC Comics fan just because that's what I've been exposed to through movies and TV and Cartoons mostly. I'd seen the X Men Cartoon and the Spiderman one but... there's been more DC media in my life and the small amount of comic book reading that I've done has been all DC.
SO... this marathon was really perfect leading into the Avengers because I hadn't seen all the films AND I wasn't really familiar with all the characters that would be featured in the Avengers.
OH IT WAS AMAZING!
THE LINE UP: Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers (Midnight Premiere)
Not only did this marathon refresh my memory on the films I'd already seen, it also built up the dynamic between the Avengers team in a way. There are a few scenes involving SHIELD here and there. Nick Fury shows up here and there. Then there are the secret scenes that show up before and after the credits of each film. So by the time I got to the AVENGERS I was already kind of familiar with the group dynamics.
I love the way the plots of all the films are so interconnected. I don't know if I would be able to appreciate the plotting as much if I hadn't seen them all back to back. It all just WORKED SO WELL. The Marathon was a fantastic idea. I figured I'd sleep through one film. But no way. It was like back to back thrilling audio visual rollercoaster rides. These films are a visual feast. Did I mention that I love explosions. OMG. Explosion/fight heaven. The mud wrestling in Thor. Thor was like a lightshow. That rainbow bridge alone... IDRIS ELBA. Oh... Tony Stark is a laugh a minute. The Mad Hatter and Prince Charming from Once Upon a Time showed up. I cried so hard watching Captain America... and also watching the Hulk hahaha! These films are just... Oh and I cried watching the Avengers too. Yum Yum Yum! Delicious. Exceeded my expectations by far.

Catching Up On the Mentalist
"Always Bet On Red"
Watching this show again was like wrapping myself in a warm blanket. I really missed it and immediately it was as though no time had passed. There's something about the Mentalist that I love and I can't put my finger on what it is. Yes I have an intense crush on Patrick Jane. Yes Cho is my secret husband. Yes I love the ensemble cast. But there's something more! There's something comforting about the formula and the weird pinging keyboard music. There's something streamlined and ... it's like a modern architecture coffee table book true crime show. There's so much air and space and clean lines. There are not really surprises... but when there are surprises.. they really stand out in the ... modern architecture backdrop.
Anyways, I really want to be a criminal so Cho can tackle me. Yum yum yum. Highlights: Jane's hair. Lisbon's hair, eyes and cheekbones. Grace is a modern day amazon woman and I love her distrustful bitterness. I missed this show. Cho's platinum blonde informant is growing on me. She's a fun recurring character.
I didn't guess who the killer was before hand. The video from Red John was really spooky. Jane has been convicted of killing Red John and now he's covering for Red John, throwing the FBI off the trail. I guess.... he's really trying to save the detective lady's life but... I'm worried.

A Seperation - Movie Night Oct 2012

Tonight I watched “A Separation” with my internet friend Chatchien. It is an Iranian film I think and it won best Foreign Language film this year at the Oscars.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1832382/
I’d seen a preview of the film before, so I knew a little bit of what the film was about. It was an amazing script. There was a diverse cast of characters. I love the way I was immersed in a whole other culture. The female characters were all so strong and empowering. It was a mystery. The informal court system in the film had me wishing for a Law and Order: Iran. There would be never a dull moment: crime scene arguments complete with angry reenactments on site, long suffering judges, insanely strict punishments for crimes… I wish this could happen. My brain doesn’t like me right now so I’m just going to make a list.
• The opening Xeroxing reminded me of the X-files opening credits
• Simin’s red hair (like Scully!) Honestly I was kind of girl crushing on Simin. Leila Hatami is gorgous. I want to watch all her films now.
• The family dynamics in the film
• The strong women in the film – This is especially interesting because the culture featured in the film is so full of misogyny. In the end, the female characters were the ones who took initiative, who were bold and brave. The male characters were broken, fractured, flawed and weak. This wasn’t in a feminist way, it was done in a truthful way and a very human way. I mean, it makes sense that weathering hardship, adversity and bigotry would give women more character, more wisdom than the men in their culture in some ways, especially when it comes to resolving conflict.
• The flawed men in the film: Nader’s passivity and pride; Hojjat’s anger management problems and self hatred
• Sareh Bayat as Razieh – What a stand out performance. Her face was just gorgeous to look at. Physically she’s got amazing bone structure but performance wise she’s just brilliant. Razieh has a quiet strength. She’s very devout, hard working and just good and noble in a Ned Stark kind of way. LOL!
• All of the performances were really wonderful.
• The daughters, but especially the older daughter.
• The ending was perfect.
• It was really triggering for me at the beginning because the grandfather character was senile and they were scrambling to find someone to care for him during the day. Really reminded me of the last two months of my grandmother’s life. I cried like a baby at the beginning with the grandfather didn’t want Simin to go.
• Book Recommendation from Chat: Reading Lolita in Tehran
• Link to the bahai Religion: http://www.bahai.us/
• On a completely random note I will not be watching the creepy Nazi movie (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0892899/ ). I will watch the current season of The Walking Dead only because of Michonne played by Danai Gurira and only during broad daylight. I may watch the premiere of American Horror Story Season 2 during the day sometime. If it hooks me I might watch, if not I will sigh in relief and stay away.
Next movie night is my choice. Hmm…

Game of Thrones 3x08 - The Second Sons
Either the pacing of this season is really uneven or the fact that I've read through the entire Song of Ice and Fire series is hurting my enjoyment of the show. Either way I'm pretty much meh when I hear the opening music and that makes me sad.
I've been looking forward to Arya's travels with the Hound ever since I read it in the book. I enjoyed the opening scene between them. Arya smiled her first smile in what seems like forever when she realized that the Hound was going to ransom her to her mother and Robb. They played really hopeful happy music at the end of the scene too. Ah the landscape shots. Just perfect. I love that the Hound mentioned saving Sansa to Arya. The Stark family is so fractured. I love any moments that remind me of the happy times in episode one when the family was all together at Winterfell. The Hound is a second son. He tells Arya about how his older brother is much scarier than him.
The title characters are a group of sell swords. In the book we learn that they are supposedly made up of second sons, men who for one reason or another were disowned by their families or, because the first son inherits everything, thought they could make a better fortune as a sell sword. We don't get all this information in the episode and maybe we don't get all this info when we first meet them in the book, but that's my favorite thing about them. Dany's court scenes in her tent are... there's a sameness to them all. YAWN. Dany does a great job holding her own against the Titan's Bastard. I love her use of the line from the book, "I am only a young girl..." That gave me a thrill. The look she gave the Titan's Bastard after he slapped Missandei on the ass was wonderful. "Kill him first, Ser Barristan.""With pleasure." LOL!
Stannis is the second son to beat all second sons. I guess he's got the middle child syndrome. "Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!" LOL! His sulking tickles me. Poor Gendry arrives at Dragonstone. I love that Stannis still uses Davos as his moral compass. Is Stannis a sociopath? LOL! Stannis doesn't listen to Davos' advice though, he's totally turned to the Red God. I really miss the religious aspect of Davos' return from the sea. It makes me sad that he didn't have his vision of the Mother on the show. I guess I understand why they cut it but it's a huge part of his character for me. I still hope Shireen will save Gendry and Davos will smuggle them both away. I have to say, as a Arya/Gendry shipper I am NOT happy with Melisandre deflowering Gendry. GRR! I'm just glad she didn't conceive a demon shadow thing with him. The leach on Gendry's penis was very silly. Maybe the penis leach is the one intended for Joffrey. LOL! But I did enjoy the lead in to Gendry's blood transfusion. It reminded me of Hansel and Gretel where the witch seems so nice and fattens them up only to eat them for dinner. Oh I almost forgot! Davos can read! <3 <3 <3
I've been dreading the Tyrion x Sansa wedding all season. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Olenna really enjoyed all the miserable, humiliated Lannisters. A Sansa x Loras wedding would have been much more joyous I'm sure. The Tyrells would have been so smug about outwitting the Lannisters. Sansa knelt for Tyrion which is a deviation from the book. I LOVED Tyrion threatening Joffrey. Cersei crushing Margaery's attempt to charm her was stomach churning. Total book!Cersei. Subtle as a sledgehammer. If only she could manage a little subtlety. Loras' attempt to chat with Cersei was also crushed though not as brutally. LOL! Tyrion did not bed Sansa and Shae was glad of it. What a mess. I wonder how long it will take Tywin to find out from the servants that Tyrion is not being obedient. Poor Tyrion. Second Lannister Son.
Dany x Daario! Oh my ovaries! <3 <3 <3 Bring on the soft core porn!
Sam and Gilly are so sweet together. Randall Tarly. What a horrible man. Sam is NOT a second son but he's been treated as one because he's so gentle and doesn't meet his father's approval. THE HEART TREE. It had a pained man's face. I wonder if they are going to dispense with Cold Hands and just have the Bloodraven drive the plot forward in the form of large murders of crows. That would be interesting. Well, I knew something was going to happen so I covered my eyes. That white walker showed up. I don't know if they are after Gilly's baby in the books but... that was creepy. I hope they didn't really leave that Dragonglass dagger in the snow. Sam the Slayer is born!
Well next week looks action packed. There will be sword fights. That's fun. Seems that Jon Snow will have some tough decisions to make. There will be another wedding. Robb continues to plan his attack on Casterly Rock. Bran's plot looks like it's going to finally get interesting. Looked like Talisa was at Edmure's wedding. Eek!

The Rains of Castamere - Game of Thrones 3x09
Well. I cried a lot.
I knew I would. Catelyn. Ug. I wasn't as upset as when I first read it of course but I was shaking and crying and pounding things with my fists and saying NO! a lot. Tragedy. Cat was so fierce. Anyways... I didn't really want to see her ruin her face but... she went mad in the books. Why the change? The massacre was oddly staged IMO. Robb was wandering around a lot. Cat was under a table. There was no Great Jon Umber. Ah well. I guess I just thought the massacre part of the wedding should have gone much faster, no announcements just music, door closes, BAM. I also thought in the book that the transition from Party to Massacre was more... interesting because it highlights the similarities between a very loud party and a battle. I just imagined there being an overlap between party and massacre and Catelyn is the only person in the Stark/Tully party who notices right away. The room seemed emptier than I remember. I'm re-reading all the Catelyn Stark chapters while I mourn this month so I'll see if I'm misremembering when I reach the end. I'm happy for D&D. I remember from several interviews that they hoped to reach the Red Wedding from the very beginning. You made it guys!
I giggled at Mary Frey correcting BIG DADDY FREY about her name.
Oh I love the fast and furious way all the Starks gobbled down their food when they arrived at the Twins. The protection of guest right or whatever. CURSED BE ALL THE FREYS. Except Mary. And the Frey women who were making eyes at the Blackfish. And that kid from the book that was squire to Robb and wanted to stay with Robb. And Roslin. But all the rest... CURSED. Speaking of Roslin... I love that Cat cried and looked so proud when she saw Edmure getting married. So lovely. Roslin is so cute.
I was never much of a Robb/Talisa fan. I really don't know why they changed the story from the way it was in the books frankly. Hot sex? I'm puzzled. Talisa's story didn't really add anything interesting and it didn't go anywhere. Oona Chaplin is wonderful. I wish should could have had a better role in the series. She could have been a part of the Dornish storyline. She would have made a FANTASTIC Sand Snake. What a waste. That whole story line just seemed forced to me and took away from Robb being a badass war strategist and took away from Catelyn being... well... onscreen at all. I'm sad about the way Robb and Talisa died but... the lameness of their storyline took away from the tragedy for me. Frey's comments on their relationship rang more true than all the forced true love speeches between them during the past two seasons.
Bring on the massacre of the FREYS!
RICKON! What a cutie. The parting of Bran and Rickon was quite a tearjerker. I adore any Stark Family crumbs that get tossed my way so Bran and Rickon's excitement and joy about Jon being alive was wonderful to see. Bran WARGED! That was fantastic. The sound effect that goes with the warging is so creepy and fun. Bran saved Jon. I was sad for Ygritte when Jon deserted the Wildlings but Jon really doesn't belong with them. I wanted Jon to get mysteriously shot with an arrow (Ygritte's maybe?) the way he does in the book. Kit Harrington was so wet and beautiful and ... beautiful. <3 <3 <3 I'm slowly falling for him.
"We're not Southerners!" You tell Osha, Rickon. I love what has become of Osha's character on the show. She's much more present and interesting than in the books. So I'm glad that there was an actual goodbye between Bran and Osha and Rickon. I hope Rickon and Osha continue to have screentime on the show. It would be fun to see, ahead of the new books, what's been going on with Rickon and Osha. I won't get my hopes up too high on that.
Dany's storyline was good, it was just difficult to be interested in it with the Red Wedding coming to a climax. My heart breaks for Jorah and ... as tedious as Dany's plot was in the books at times, it felt more like she EARNED her place. I'm sure next season there will be plenty of starving and plagues and boring sitting on pillows. I just felt that Dany had really earned a liaison with Daario in the books. On the show... taking over the East seems like a breeze! I know the show doesn't have much time.
Poor Arya. She seriously needs therapy now and she's not going to get any. I look forward to her continued travels with the Hound but... it's so sad.
Looking ahead It will be fun to see Brienne in King's Landing and I hope there's a confrontation with Loras. I'm actually looking forward to the Jaime/Cersei reunion. Wait. I just remembered the Jaime/Cersei reunion in the book. Maybe the show will change it. *gags* :( :( :(
A Jaime/Tyrion scene would be nice. Wait... :( :( :(
Things are going to get much worse before they get better. Why am I watching this show again. Periodically I would stop reading and wonder the same thing about the books so... they must be doing something right.
Now that season 3 is coming to a close, I think having read the books has hampered my ability to enjoy this season. I'll have to re-watch the series and see if... it's any better without my anticipation of the visual representation of my reading. One more episode to go and then the LONG WAIT. Maybe the She Wolves of Winterfell will come out while I'm waiting. *crosses fingers*
