I'm finally starting to watch Mad Men. There are four seasons of this show. It's gonna take me forever to catch up.
The Mistress. I would say Don's mistress, but he does not possess her. <3
I had fun for the first 40 minutes of the show. As an African American female, I has several uncomfortable moments due to all the unchecked racism and sexism embedded in the culture but the unpleasantness was far outweighed by the production quality/entertainment value of this interesting show. I don't have any particular interest in Advertising or any of it, but the show held my attention VERY well.
My first emotional investment of the show: Don Draper.
I can't help but feel for this guy. He already feels like the hero in a Greek Tragedy to me. LOL! There's just something so engaging about staring at his profile as he smokes a cigarette. How does he manage to be such a salesman and yet not at all phony. He's living a lie in a lot of ways but somehow... it doesn't feel like he's putting on a facade. He seems so HONEST in a strange way. I really think I could watch this guy do anything. I kind of already did watch him do anything. I watched him watch a fly, I watched him do his weird exercises. I don't know if watching him can carry me all the way through four seasons but I know it will probably get me through the next few episodes.
Don's weird exercises
The young pack of guys who prowl around the office like a pack of wolves... no that's insulting to the dignity and danger of wolves... weasels? They are such JERKS!
"You gotta let 'em know what kind of guy you are so they'll know what kind of girl to be." Says the biggest jerk of the jerk pack. That resonated with me and made me think of a Tori Amos song.
PROGRAMMABLE SODA
Joan Halloway. It really is a crime that I don't have a picture of this scrumptious, voluptuous redhead. She is mistress of her own sexuality in this man's world. I don't know how she pulls this off but I'm a little bit in love with her and in awe of her already. A lot of the first day advice she gave ... hurt me. It really hurt. UG! The sexism! No wonder she has swayed my unsullied second emotional investment into the show character to the dark side.
Peggy Olsen
I spotted the overcompensating homosexual guy right away. I didn't need the blatant hints in the club.
I love the way the department store client hurt Don and Co.'s feelings. LOL! They run rampant on all the women in their employ and then this client tells them like it is for five minutes and Don gets his feelings hurt. LOL! Hilarious. Insulting and hypersensitive.
"Let's take it a little slower. I don't want to wake up pregnant." - Don Draper to overeager engaged guy.
LOL! Overeager engaged guy is a ticking time bomb and he's the reason I didn't like the last few minutes of the episode. I cannot believe that Peggy Olsen slept with this slime ball! He didn't even have to romance her even a little!!! He was just male, drunk and at her door. EW! I do enjoy his ambition and the way he hates and is in awe of Don at the same time.
I love the (Austrian) woman who had all of the research into death wish psychology. Dr. Coppin?
Love the moment during the meeting about cigarettes when EVERYONE starts coughing. PERFECTION! Cacophony of coughing. LOL!
Don has a last minute moment of inspiration regarding the Cigarette job. I was so pleased that they just let him frak up in front of the clients. He stared into space. He stuttered. It was so horribly wonderful to see him so obviously stumped and unprepared. Then he gets his stroke of
Don: Thank you up there.
Silver Fox Boss Guy: You're looking in the wrong direction.
Oooh Don is so angry with Overeager Engaged Guy. OEG saw the blood in the water when Don was stumped about the cigarettes and took his chance. LOL! Don so subtly conveys his displeasure. My favorite is the glance of death. And it really is a glance, not an overly long TV glance, a real, half a second glance but still... OF DEATH. LOL! Oh wonderful. Don is just... yum.
The clothes are sharp, the timing is sharp, the writing is sharp. This show is so nice and clean and neat.
I felt so sorry for Peggy when Don was mean to her. I admit that the hand hold was creepy. But still... my heart broke for her.
"What you call love was invented by guys like me to sell nylons." - Don Draper
I hated the department store client when she was on Sons of Anarchy but she's great here. Wonder what the glitch is on the other show.
Mad Men is a fantastic show. So much eye candy. Such good writing. But it's so depressing. I need a beacon of hope! I don't think I'm going to find one on this show. I hoped that Miss Olsen would be it, but she slept with creepy Overeager Engaged Guy. :( Get your eleven dollars worth (monthly cost of birth control) Miss Olsen, but not with this creep. Hopefully Joan will scold her and set her straight. Or maybe she made the right move. I don't know the office vixen do's and don'ts.
Then Don Draper's lovely wife. Oh she's just so blond and sweet looking. And his little kiddos! So, so depressing. I don't know how long I'm going to last, but I see why this show is so popular.
